Lingerie and the Art of Ornamentation. An interview with Prof. Dr. Laurent de Sutter

From the origins of basic undergarments to the Victorian corset and the birth of the gravity defying underwire bra- women have been looking for ways to support, suppress or accentuate the curves for a very long time. The ancient Egyptians wore a band of linen under their diaphanous robes to flatten the bust line, Cretan women invented the corset to create an hour glass waist and the women of ancient Greece, banned from wearing corsets and crinoline, wore the Apodesme instead: a band of fine material tied around the torso for supporting the breasts during movement. The invention of the brassiere, broadly referred to as the bra, liberated women from the pain of the corset, which had proven to cause irrevocable damages to the female well-being over the course of time. It’s been a long road from women’s health to Ermine Cadolle, Agent Provocateur, Carine Gilson and La Perla…

Flourless Orange, Maple and Chia Tea Cakes

hare & tortoise kitchen

Using natural sugars from maple and coconut, coupled with seasonal fruits (granny smith apples and navel oranges) has allowed us  to create a yummy treat without the guilt factor.

Maple syrup contains nutrients to include calcium, iron, zinc, potassium and manganese. When shopping for maple syrup, aim to buy real maple syrup, and avoid the maple “flavoured” syrup. The other sweetener in this recipe is coconut sugar. It contains vitamin C, potassium, phosophorus, magnanese, calcium, zinc and iron and has a low glycemic index of 35, compared to refined sugar which is up between 65 – 70. Both Maple syrup and Coconut Sugar are extracted from the sap of trees and not altered chemically in any way, BONUS!! However they are still sugars, and should be consumed in moderation.

This recipe is super easy .. and we almost forgot to mention, gluten free too!

Semi-Annual Sale Finds at V.S.

It’s that time of year!! The Semi-Annual Sale at Victoria’s Secret has always been one of my favorite times to stock up on lingerie. Shopping the sale in stores can be really frustrating though. As a seasoned shopper, and former sales associate of this lovely store, I wanted to share some tips on how to navigate the madness in stores and also get the best deals!

So, it’s actually been a while since I have shopped the Semi-Annual Sale in stores. I worked as a sales associate during graduate school in 2013 and 2014, and it was always chaos. Since then I have primarily shopped online… I’m not sure if it was PTSD or just sympathy for the those working the sale that kept me away so long…but this year I ventured back into the madness of lace and lingerie.

So, I think some advantages to shopping in stores are:

  1. The stores will usually have different items than what you will find online.
  2. You can try everything on.
  3. Everything is wayyyy cheaper! Especially toward the end of the sale.

I actually bought the majority of my pieces this year in stores, and then went online to get  a few extra things that I had my eye on.

See below Winter 2017 additions to the Lingerie Closet:

These are my favorite purchases from this year’s sale!! I am absolutely in love with this romper. I actually bought it in two colors (“smoked plum” and red). It is really so flattering, and perfect for Sunday tea parties at home. Also- side note- this piece was not featured on the online sale!

Another favorite is this adorable robe. I think floral patterns are just so pretty and the mix of colors on this one is perfect. I’ve already worn it with so many different things!

I also had to get more lace shorties; these are becoming one of my favorite styles
(Note: these are from the Body by Victoria collection).

Another in store purchase… I was actually pretty pleased with myself for finding three matching sets during the semi annual sale! I have a small obsession with matching, I’ll write more on that here. All of these are from the Dream Angels collection, which has always been my favorite (everything about this collection is very romantic and feminine). Unfortunately, some of the bottoms were not included in the sale – so I had to do a little searching around to find the full sets. I was just so happy to find everything!
(This is an important tip for shopping in stores or online:
Don’t just search the sale rack/bin if you’re looking for matching sets.)

I think my favorite of these sets is the high-neck metallic top in ensign blue. It is so festive for winter and really different than anything else I own. I haven’t had a chance to wear it yet…mostly because I’m not sure what I would wear it under. A turtle neck is the obvious choice. I may also try wearing it alone with just a blazer and high-waist pants.
We will see 😉

I adore this piece so much! I ordered it online, and it is even more lovely in person. I think this bodysuit is actually pretty conservative. I would totally wear this out with jeans or a cute skirt. Also, the back is almost all mesh, with just a little detailing. There wasn’t a photo online showing the back, so this was a nice surprise!

Finally, I found these last two items online as well…
I just had to order a matching bra to go with the “smoked plum” shortie I found in stores.  I am really really loving this color!
(Another tip: start with shopping the sale in stores and finish online).

Lastly, these sleep shorts were too cute, I had to get them. I love the pattern, and they were at such a great price.  Bonus points, they are also really comfortable!

That’s all for today….
I hope you all enjoyed the latest updates from the Lingerie Closet 🙂

Until next time.

Cardamom Saffron Tea Cookies

These look absolutely amazing! I can’t wait to try these this winter ❤

P.S. Check out this great blog for more fabulous recipes like this one!!

Today we celebrated Diwali again. Yes, I know, it’s more than two weeks past the real Diwali, yet we are not done celebrating it yet. This is probably my 4th Diwali celebration this year. This time it was at the Deloitte office. I have been with the firm for just two weeks now, yet, it feels like I have been here always. Friendly welcoming people. This is what you want, right? Speaking for myself –  It’s the people who keeps it worthwhile.

The Diwali Luncheon was bustling with festive spirit. Most of the partners and senior partners of the firm were all dressed in Indian attire, there were various food stalls, a henna lady was doing henna art in the corner. There was wine and coffee and other drinks served in another corner. It was Diwali Celebration alright.

Milk-Tea White Russians <3

I first discovered milk tea a few months ago. I was attending a dessert party with some friends this past fall and wanted to bring something that would go well with pumpkin pie, cookies, crème brulee… and all other sorts of rich and decadent desserts.

My go-to is always tea. It’s hard to go wrong there but then I found a recipe for milk tea! It’s pretty simple, you just steep the tea in milk instead of water…and ta-da!! There isn’t much else that can make you feel cozier than warm milk and cookies.

Since then I have been experimenting with milk tea. So far I have made a milk tea glaze – for tea cakes. And now…Milk-Tea White Russians!

Here is what you will need to master this drink:

  1. The perfect tea maker: You can find it here
  2. Loose leaf tea of your choice
  3. Milk

Once you have stepped the tea, add 2oz of you milk-tea to the following:

  4. Baileys espresso Crème Liqueur (1.5oz)
  5. Coffee Liqueur (.25oz)
  6. Vodka of choice (.5oz)

Then simply shake and pour over ice!

This drink is such an indulgence! It is also sooo simple to make. My favorite tea to use with this is Tevana’s White Chocolate Peppermint.

Authenticity (Dec. 29, 2016)

“Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?”
-Charles Bukowski

As 2016 draws to an end, I have been drafting my list of new years resolutions (which I will share here). However, I keep coming back to one that is my primary resolution for 2017.

Resolution #1:
Choose behaviors that are consistent with the most authentic version of yourself.

In graduate school, my classmates and I learned several different therapy styles (note: my education is in clinical psychology and family studies). However, the one that has always stuck with me was ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy). I view ACT as more than a therapeutic approach though, and here I want to share/propose it as a lifestyle choice.

“My life – my personality, my habits, even my speech – is a combination of the books I choose to read, the people I choose to listen to, and the thoughts I choose to tolerate in my mind…”
-Andy Andrews

There are a lot of components to ACT that are beyond the scope of this post (you can read more on that here). As it relates to my new year’s resolution, ACT is all about “living in a values consistent way”. So what does that mean and how does one do that?

The first step would be to consider what you value most. In therapy, you would probably be asked to rank these values. For example the top 6 values on my list are as follows:

1.Authenticity (to be authentic, genuine, real; to be true to myself)
2.Self-care (to look after my health and wellbeing)
3.Beauty (to appreciate, create, or cultivate beauty in myself, others, & environment)
4.Intimacy (to open up, reveal, and share myself in my close relationships)
5.Creativity (to be creative or innovative)
6.Order (to be orderly and organized)

So your unique set of values represents, on some level, the most authentic version of yourself. The next step then, is to identify behaviors that serve your values and then consciously choose to spend your time engaging in these behaviors based on each value’s priority level. That is, if your #1 value is family, the corresponding behavior should be spending time with family. Further, this should take priority over behaviors that match values #2-infinity.

Here are some more examples of behaviors that match the values I have identified for myself:

-act in a values consistent way, be consistent between interactions with others, match
words, feelings, and actions
-yoga, working out, tea-time, reading, clean eating, sleep
-kindness, give, volunteer, church, nursery, hair, nails, makeup, flowers, lingerie,
perfume, give compliments, tea parties, animals, books, art,
-spend time with friends, have meaningful conversations, fall in love
-writing (journaling and publishing research articles), crafting, drawing, blogging
-cleaning the apartment regularly, laundry, dishes, keep desk organized, clean out purse

It sounds simple enough, but often times it seems that instead of managing our time this way, we fill our calendars with so many dates, activities, and events that do not serve our values. Also, as women, society conditions us from a very early age to acquiesce, so really this is not surprising.

The result though, is when we do this, we are often over worked, over booked, and just simply tired. In my opinion, the most authentic and healthy thing we can do for ourselves in 2017 would be to identify our values, say no when we are presented with plans that do not align with our values…. and more importantly make time to say yes when they do!

Warsan Shire said it best:
Document the moments you feel most in love with yourself – what you’re wearing, who you’re around, what you’re doing. Recreate and repeat.”

If you’d like to complete this exercise yourself you can find a list of values here or here!

Daily Makeup Routine (Winter Edition)

I ❤ makeup. On my list of favorite things…I would say that it comes in at a close second, next to tea time and lingerie (which are tied for my #1). That said, there are few things that make me happier than finding a new lipstick or buying a newly coveted eye shadow pallet. However, similar to my closet, there are a few staples on my dressing table right now.

These of course change with the season, or depend on the occasion. I thought I would share what has become my daily makeup routine this winter! These have been my go-to products when I am getting ready for work, errands, etc.
